Ghost Town Camping
29th May 2015
There are a lot of things we look for when trying to find the right camping spot. Some of us look for an abundance of trees. Others seek out seclusion. Then there are others who want to be around specific landmarks. However, there are some that have focused their attention on a ghost town. The Daily Press explores this in a recent article titled “‘Ghost Town’ has a lot to offer to campers, explorers.”
Russ and Lori Trice of the Daily Press write, “Let’s start with a local attraction that offers many options to camping. It’s just up Interstate 15 at Ghost Town Road in Yermo. Calico is a truly historical ghost town that offers a view into history, combined with up to date features and presentations from its beginnings to the present. Calico offers everything from tent camping to full hook-up rv camping with water, power, and sewer availability. Pets are allowed. Rates are about $30-$40 a night. Calico is an old west mining town that began in about 1881. Calico produced about 20 million dollars in silver ore over a 12-year span. In the late 1890’s , the silver ore ran out. Many inhabitants left Calico. It became a ‘Ghost Town.’ Walter Knott purchased Calico in the 1950’s. Knott restored five of the original buildings as they appeared in the 1880’s. Calico has been restored to the silver rush era. Calico was registered as a California Historical landmark in 1962.”
If the Ghost Town isn’t your cup of tea, App Advice, aptly (no pun intended) offers helpful advice on finding your ideal camping location in a recent article titled “How to find locations for your next camping trip.” Sandy Stachowiak of App Advice writes, “The Good Sam Camping app provides all the information you need to choose your next campground. Starting your search is simple. If you have enabled location services on your device, you can browse through nearby parks with a click. If you would prefer to search manually, that option is available as well and you can also review recent searches. Once your list of campgrounds appears you can filter by distance, rating, or those with offers. You can also filter by park feature such as those that allow pets or have Internet access. When you have finished filtering, the list has a nice display with icons so you get a quick view of the park’s offerings. You can also see the distance from your location, star rating, and city.”
Every experienced camper knows that preparation is key. One way to stay on top of your supplies is with an Extreme Camping Cool Weather Blanket from Armory Replicas. The 100 percent cotton thermal blanket is woven designed for a longer use wash after wash. Its stitched hem prevents the blanket from fraying. The blanket is designed with proper weight for longevity purposes. This blanket may be rough but it is virtually waterproof, as water does not penetrate the fiber. Because of the tight weave and heavy quality, it’s also very warm. Its color also makes this blanket dirt resistant. This is a must have for all camping in cool weather to protect against cold and dampness.
