Anduril, the Elven Sword

Armory Replicas carries a good deal of weaponry and other replicas based on classic fantasy literature. One source of inspiration has been J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary The Lord of the Rings (LOTR), one of the world’s most beloved fantasy series. The book needs no introduction, but the name of a particular sword from LOTR, Anduril, may not be immediately familiar to the casual reader.
The sword is most closely associated with its eventual owner, Aragorn, but there is a good deal of history to this sword within Tolkien’s universe. Here is a bit of background on Anduril:
-The sword Anduril is originally named Narsil in the Tolkien legendarium, and was carried by the ancient fighter Elendil at the battle of Dagorlad. However, it is re-forged after being stomped into pieces by the villain of LOTR, Sauron. Thus Anduril is often referred to within the books as “The Sword that was Broken” or “The Sword Reforged.”
-Though Anduril, in both the books of LOTR and in the popular film adaptations, first appears in the first volume, The Fellowship of the Ring, it does not appear prominently until the series’ third installment, The Return of the King. There Anduril reemerges, still shattered into pieces, in the possession of the noble elf Elrond. Elrond’s daughter, Arwen, convinces him to have the sword re-forged.
-The sword makes a few brief appearances during The Fellowship’s travels—once when Aragorn discovers the shattered Anduril in Rivendell, and notices that the blade is still sharp. The broken sword is used by Aragorn, in the books, as proof that he is the heir to the kingdom of Gondor.
-In The Return of the King, the sword is given to Aragorn, who has been discovered as the heir to the throne of the kingdom of Gondor. The sword appears equipped with special scabbard, which is overlaid with flowers, leaves, and runes spelling the sword’s name and significance. The scabbard is enchanted such that the blade it contained would be immune to stains, cracks, and breaking—even if its user were defeated!
