At Armory Replicas, we offer a diverse selection of weaponry, armor, and other cool items for collectors. Some are inspired by fantasy, others by historical battles and armies, and some by ancient mythology itself. Greek and Roman mythology have exerted a lasting influence on both historical fiction and fantasy as genres, and our wares offer them homage! For now, let’s look at one of Greek mythology’s Olympic gods, Hermes, who is commemorated by some of our merchandise.

Hermes is a Greek god who symbolizes swiftness, transitions, and boundaries. He is the herald of the Olympiad gods, one of Zeus’s sons, and the god who sees over such things as shepherds, land travel, weights and measures, and merchants. It may seem like a great deal of responsibility for one of Olympus’ many gods to bear, but Hermes bore the burden well!

Works of literature have depicted varying accounts of the character of Hermes. Homer’s epic Iliad referred to him as “the bringer of good luck,” “guide and guardian,” and “excellent in all the tricks.” Hermes even played a direct role in the Trojan Wars in Homer’s famed account, as he was a divine ally of the Greeks but, in spite of this, assisted the Trojan Priam on his mission to the Greek camp to retrieve his son Hector’s body. Hesiod similarly depicted Hermes as a deceptive trickster in his works.

One of the most famous mythological anecdotes of Hermes concerns his theft of cattle from Apollo. Hermes, still allegedly an infant at the time, jumped from his crib, hid the cattle, and jumped back into his crib just in time to pretend to be innocent upon Apollo’s return. However, Apollo was not to be fooled, and took Hermes directly to his father, the divine Zeus. Zeus, however, was merely amused—he laughed out loud at the craftiness of a mere infant!

As is the case with many Greek gods, Hermes has an equivalent in Roman mythology. Mercury, Hermes’ Roman counterpart, is the Roman patron god of financial gain, commerce, and poetry. He also lends his name to the planet Mercury.

Armory Replicas is happy to offer a relic of the mythological Hermes—the Hermes God of Mercury Messenger Helmet. This 14.5-inch long helmet has wings on both sides to represent the swiftness of the god Hermes, a leather lining and chin straps inside, and is oiled to prevent rusting. It’s the envy of any fantasy collector—buy it today!
