A flat-topped cylinder of solid 18 gauge polished carbon steel that completely covers the head, our Great Helm (or heaume) is strong, tough and fully capable of absorbing the shock of combat! Well vented with 56 breathing holes (28 on each side of the helmet) to prevent overheating, this battle-ready and fully functional helmet features just the narrowest of eye slits to maximize protection but at the same time does not restrict the field of vision as it is very close to the wearer's eyes. Produced by hand using the same techniques that were being used over 600-800 years ago, an iron cross adorns the front of this Crusader classic. Fully wearable, the Great Helm comes complete with a heavy duty adjustable genuine leather liner and chin strap and is perfect for role-players or re-enactors! Developed early in the 12th Century, the Great Helm quickly became the mainstay of the medieval fighting man for well over 300 years with it's heyday coming in the heat of the 3rd Crusade. Offering much more protection than its predecessors the Spangenhelm and Nasal Helmet, the Great Helm was the first helmet that completely enclosed the head and stood the test of time as the ultimate in protection that technology of the time could allow for.
