Are Popular Dice Theories “Dubious?”

13th Mar 2015

Many people across the United States love to play craps. People have different strategies but one writer is warning craps players to be careful how they approach the game. Mark Pilarski of the Detroit Free Press addresses this in a recent article titled “Don't get rolled by dubious theories about dice.”

Pilarkski writes, “Setting dice on a craps game has been practiced forever and is typically not considered illegal. Dice-setting rules or decisions come under each individual casino's policy. Where it is allowed, the only problem dice setters might encounter is taking heat from a box man for holding up a game by taking too long to find their set… Can dice shooters set the dice in a particular way and alter the conventional odds of the game? I fly on the side of gaming folklore and hold that it isn't so, but others in the gaming business disagree. A favorite gambling author of mine, Frank Scoblete, wrote an enjoyable book on the subject called ‘Golden Touch Dice Control Revolution!’ I'm not saying no dice to his belief, but after spending 18 years on the inside and umpteen on the out, I have to see something to believe it. And I haven't seen dice-setting work yet — with an officially permitted toss that is.”

Some people might be attempted to eliminate this issue by playing party craps. However, some writers say it’s just not the same. Matt Villano of the San Francisco Gate addresses this in a recent article titled “Odds same in party craps, but card game lacks dice feel.” Villano writes, “As for me, I’m not a huge fan. Some of my favorite things about traditional craps include obsessing over which two of the five dice I’m going to throw, perfectly (or neurotically) aligning the dice I’m going to use, then arching them from an underhanded toss toward the back wall of the felt. With party craps, I can’t do any of that — at least not with dice that are in any way part of the game. If I wanted a table game where the dealer managed all the action, I’d much rather sit down at a game of blackjack or three-card poker.”
