Axe Throwing Gains Popularity Around the World

Are you looking for a new hobby? Are you finding that less activities truly excite you these days? This might be a good time to look into taking up axe throwing. According to the Nottingham Post, the axe throwing championships will be held in Nottinghamshire this summer. The Nottingham Post reports, “Around 150 throwers will take part in the EuroThrowers Championship at Woodend Farm Complex, in Huthwaite. It's the first time the competition is being staged in the UK.”
This event won’t just be great for axe throwing enthusiasts though. The author notes that the axe throwing championships will also be a boost for local businesses. This author writes, “George Cowcher, chief executive of East Midlands Chamber of Commerce, said: ‘While this event is no doubt quirky and quite unique, it's something of a coup for Nottinghamshire to be hosting the European axe-throwing championships this summer. And while it will not draw the sort of crowds that a Trent Bridge Test match may attract, local businesses will benefit from the influx of around 150 competitors and their supporters into the area over the weekend of the event.’”

If you’re looking for axe throwing competitions a little bit closer to the United States, you might look into the Backyard Axe Throwing League. According to Kaitlyn Kochany of the Torontoist, “‘The biggest trick to throwing an axe is just to follow through. Grip is important, your stance is important, but I’d equate it to a tennis serve.’ As the owner of BATL Alternative Sports, Matt Wilson would know. He’s taken axe-throwing from a backyard hobby and a local phenomenon to a rapidly expanding company that aims to have 35 locations across North America by 2017. BATL currently sees about 2,000 to 3,000 people through private events each month in its two Toronto locations, and will be adding a third in February, in North York. It also operates from a location in Pickering—and Wilson now has his eye on Kitchener-Waterloo, Ottawa, and Calgary. It’s come a long way since the league’s beginnings in 2006, when Wilson and a handful of friends got together in his backyard for a little cottage-inspired mayhem.”
