Matriarchies, or societies that are headed by their femal elders, have existed since the dawn of man (or rather, the dawn of woman). Though modern western culture is dominated today by largely patriarchal values and practices, at the beginning of time, man looked to his mother for guidance and leadership. The global shift from matriarchal to patriarchal societies did not happen overnight. Many Native American cultures were - and still are - centered around a matriarch as well.

Even in modern American society, widely held to be patriarchal in nature, many of us still come from households that depend on and honor Mom, with our mothers often having the final say in household decisions.
