Chainmail: Then and Now
6th May 2014
Perhaps one of the most innovative developments in ancient warfare, chainmail changed the game when it came to storming into battle. The wearable metal mesh was nigh impenetrable, protecting the vital organs from what would otherwise have been a deathblow from an enemy combatant. The age-old technology was pivotal in medieval warfare, and still plays a role in modern day occupational protection.
Then:
The earliest use of mail armor is believed to have originated in Celtic culture, and the Celts are often credited with its invention. The style of armor may have been inspired by scale armor, which originated among Chinese and Japanese warriors much earlier, dating back thousands of years.
In Medieval Rome, warriors eagerly sought to acquire chainmail armor for themselves before entering battle as its protection often meant the difference between life and death. Its practical lifesaving value in turn translated to a monetary value, and chain and plated armors were often looted off of the bodies of dead soldiers to be resold at high prices for a profit.
The historic use of chainmail armor was also common across Asia and the Middle East as well as Japan, proving to be highly protective against slashing and stabbing attacks by enemies armed with sharp-edged weapons and arrows.
Now:
Today, chainmail technology still plays a vital role both in military applications and civilian occupations. Butchers wear mail clothing to shield themselves from the dangerous meat grinding and packing equipment, often wearing several pounds of protective mail gear while on the job. Butchers and kitchen workers alike utilize a single chainmail glove to avoid knife wounds when cutting meat or produce.
Modern day marine scientists and researchers employ mail body armor when scuba diving for protection from shark bites and other undersea hazards. Chainmail also provides protection for environmental professionals on land who may come into contact with bears and other wild animals.

Mail makes for beautiful decorative pieces as well, serving as an artistic medium as well as making for attractive modern
clothing and jewelry. Among our newest arrivals in stock, Armory Replicas is currently featuring a Squire of Arms Heroic Expansion Chainmail Cuff, the perfect accessory for any outfit.
