Even Cops and Troops Are Getting in on Zombie Apocalypse Training

20th Dec 2014

Zombie apocalypse classes are becoming increasingly popular around the country. It’s gotten to the point where those sworn to protect and serve us are getting in on the action.

Ben Winsor of Business Insider explores this phenomenon in a recent article titled “Even Military and Police Want to Take This College Zombie Survival Course.” He looks at a course called “Surviving the Coming Zombie Apocalypse — Disasters, Catastrophes, and Human Behavior” that’s being offered at Michigan State University. Winsor writes, “MSU's immersive online zombie course is conducted through an intense, real-time group simulation requiring students to survive while a mysterious catastrophe engulfs Michigan. Course materials range from traditional readings on human behavior and disaster management to dramatic videos that present groups with life-or-death decisions.” Glenn Stutzky, the professor teaching this course, says his goal was to increase engagement and motivation. It seems to be working. According to Winsor, “The undergraduate course sees over 100 enrollments each semester, and there has even been demand from the military, state police, and emergency managers.”

Much of the commotion around zombie survival courses revolves around their ability to teach practical skills in an innovative way. Matt Mauney of the Orlando Sentinel also takes a look at the MSU zombie survival class. He notes, “The award-winning online course divides students into survival groups and asks them to figure out how to survive the recent zombie pandemic. Students also learn about the Black Death and meteor strikes and how human behavior and nature change after catastrophes.”

While it’s both fun and informative to engage in zombie survival training with a group of classmates, you don’t necessarily need to enroll in the class to get in on the fun. At Armory Replicas, we have a huge selection of zombie apocalypse gear. This inventory includes our Avenging Zombie Slayer Tactical Combat Tomahawk.
