Get Your Hands-On Hobbit Fix

24th Mar 2015

Hobbit hype doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon. Beyond reading the books and going to see the movies, many people are taking a hands-on approach to how they engage with the work of Tolkien.

For example, according to Popular Mechanics, one man even built himself a Hobbit door. John Wenz of Popular Mechanics explores this in a recent article titled “This Guy Built a Secret 'Hobbit' Door in His Basement.” Wenz writes, “It's a plywood door filled with LED lights, sensors, and other electronics. When someone touches the door—in exactly the right spot—it lights up. At that point, the door opens for them, allowing them into the dark mines of ... a basement room. Reddit-user Eclipse_007 is even working on integrating voice recognition so he can speak ‘friend’ (in English or in Elvish) and enter right in. It's indeed a door fit for a Hobbit, though Middle Earth was a little short on Arduino micro-controllers. You can check out the rest here, or view the original Reddit post here.”

In Spain, they’re taking it to another level with a Hobbit theme park. According to Fox News, “Plans for a ‘Hobbit’ fantasy theme park in Rincon de la Victoria, Spain were unveiled last month at the international tourism fair FITUR in Madrid , reports Euro Weekly News. ‘La Comarca’—which is Spanish for ‘The Shire’—will sit on just eight hectacres in the Andalucia region. Hobbits, apparently, do not require much room to romp. ‘The Shire will become one of the major tourism attractions of our town. The material will have a very low environmental impact, to create an integrated image in nature,’ Francisco Salado, mayor of Rincon de la Victoria, announced while revealing plans. The relatively low-budget park is estimated to cost just over $1.9 billion and will be partially funded by the Malaga Provincial Council.”

Perhaps you’re not in Spain and you don’t have the ingenuity to build your own Hobbit door. There’s still hope with the Anduril Elven Medieval Sword with Scabbard from Armory Replicas.
