Go Really Retro with a Drinking Horn

Wine is a staple of many families’ dinner and/or post-dinner activities. However, few of us stop and wonder, “Where did these glasses come from?” Chef Michael Swamy of FOODIE tries to shed some light on this history in an article for Yahoo News India, titled “A glass isn’t just a glass.”

Swamy writes that the wine glass started as a goblet in Iberia, which is present day Spain. Things progressed and as the Roman Empire began to truly establish itself, the material of the goblets evolved from clay and timber to silver and gold. Then came the next big change. According to Swamy, “The next major change was seen when the Saxons introduced Europe to glassware and drinking horns. The horns were originally hollow horns of animals, but over time, the simple horns took on the form of gold horns encrusted with jewels or even leather horns. When the Christian church banned the horns (a couple of centuries later), wooden tankards made a reappearance of sorts till tumblers made from clear glass were seen in England, around the 11th Century.”

On one hand, drinking horns are seen as a relic. However, shows like Game of Thrones have brought drinking horns back into the forefront of pop culture. For example, an article titled “Friends and monsters” for the Boothbay Register references drinking horns while setting the scene of friends playing a game of Dungeons and Dragons. Reporter Ben Bulkeley writes, “There's no board, no plastic pieces and no figurines. Instead, there are worksheets, bulk bags of Reny's candy, and there is Das Horn, which is a plastic drinking horn that is filled with cream soda and passed between players.”
