Helmet of Maximus the Spaniard
23rd Jul 2014
The gladiator battles of Ancient Rome have proved fruitful inspiration for the modern artistic imagination. Countless novels, movies, plays, and research works in the past centuries have been based upon the conventions and practices of gladiator times, and the competitive intensity of gladiatorial battles. Indeed, the gladiator fights, though barbaric, stand as one of the purest feats of strength any society has staged, and this accounts for some of the modern-day popularity of the concept in art. The 2000 Ridley Scott-directed Gladiator is one of the most notable films about gladiators, and the Best Picture Academy Award it received confirms its legacy as a fine depiction of the era and the standard bearer for the revival of historical epics in the 21st century.
At the center of Gladiator’s story arc is Maximus Decimus Meridius, portrayed by Russell Crowe, who won the Best Actor Academy Award for his effort. Maximus had been in line to succeed Marcus Aurelius as emperor of Rome, but after a violent coup by Aurelius’ son Commodus, Maximus is asked to pledge loyalty to a new emperor who usurped his own rightful throne. Maximus refuses, and a protracted conflict ensues, in which Maximus sees his wife and son executed and himself captured. Maximus is then forced to fight as a gladiator himself in his quest for redemption.

Maximus becomes a beloved gladiator to the Roman masses, known as “Maximus the Spaniard” for his Hispano-Roman ethnic roots. As his popularity mounts, he dreams of being able to challenge Commodus for the throne at some later stage, and Commodus aspires to keep Maximus, whom he had thought dead, from gaining more power. As Maximus struggles with his new identity as a slave and Commodus struggles to turn his wrath on a man who is loved by the citizens he rules over, the stage is set for an unforgettable final showdown.
