Hercules: the Myth, the Movie

24th Apr 2014

Hercules, the son of Zeus, was a god among men; a mere mortal with extrahuman strength and fortitude. Fathered by the king of all deities but born to a mortal woman, Hercules was looked upon favorably by all the gods except his goddess mother Hera.

As the wife of Zeus, Hera was angered by her husbands extramarital affair that ultimately led to the birth of Hercules, and she expressed this anger as hatred for her husband’s mortal son. Soon after his birth, Hera sent serpents to his cradle to kill the baby Hercules, but even then his strength was great enough to protect himself from the deadly creatures.

After having survived the early attempt on his life, Hercules was doomed to endure many more of Hera’s plots against him. By the recommendation of Hera, Hercules was sentenced to complete twelve dangerous tasks - the famous Twelve Labours of Hercules - in the hopes that her husband’s son would perish in the attempt. As we know, in spite of Hera, our hero successfully completed his famous Twelve Labours and started his life anew.

Enter Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. His latest film, Hercules, picks up after the hero’s legendary completion of the Twelve Labors, following him through his adventures both as a mercenary and a warrior during the Thracian Wars.

Calling Hercules as “the original superhero,” it seems director Brett Ratner is attempting to present the legend of Hercules as another of the every popular comic book-style hero movies that have been taking over the summer box office top spots for the past decade. The action and adventure Hercules film is set to hit theaters July 25th, 2014, and so far it promises to be a hit.
