Kung-Fu Training Lets Man Withstand Drilling into His Skull
11th Apr 2015
What can kung-fu training do for you? Beyond the discipline and physical activity, what are the benefits? According to the Daily Mail, one man has used the martial arts to strengthen his head, literally. A writer for the Daily Mail explores this in a recent article titled “Monk who needs meditation like a hole in the head: Kung fu master uses electric drill on his temple without breaking the skin.”
According to the article “While it may look like a particularly gruesome DIY lobotomy, this Shaolin monk in Chinais showing how he has trained his body to withstand incredibly sharp objects. In a series of stunts that should most certainly not be tried at home, Zhao Rui held a running electric drill to the side of his head without breaking the skin, bent an iron bar against a wall with his throat, and led on metal spears while breaking stones with his head. According to People's Daily Online, Zhao held the powerful drill against his temple for 10 seconds - but only left a small red mark where it had been. The display was intended to show how the 24-year-old had trained his body during his years of martial arts training - and his skills have made him a celebrity in his home city of Mianzhu in south-western China's Sichuan province. But the 24-year-old admitted that he has previously accidentally drilled a hole in his head when practising the stunt, ripping off a large piece of skin.”
The vast majority of us will never look to take our training this far but it is good to know that your body has so much potential to withstand the unthinkable. Youth in Canada are starting to tap into this potential according to the North Bay Nugget in a recent article titled “Karate, kung fu students show their skills.” P.J. Wilson of the North Bay Nugget writes, “The tournament began as an attempt by martial arts schools in North Bay to get together for a day of competition and camaraderie, Darrell Couchie, of Three Fires Martial Arts Academy in North Bay, said. The first tournament was held at the Clarion Resort Pinewood Park, but even in the first year, that facility was too small for the number of competitors and spectators who showed up. It moved to Nipissing University last year. An addition this year was a clinic for referees conducted by the World Karate Congress, where certified referees offered their knowledge to officials at Saturday’s event. The clinic certified referees under the WKC rules. ‘We want to get across that these are martial arts, not UFC or MMA,’ he said. ‘In karate, we teach the Bushido code – honesty, integrity. (Students) go through the program learning the intangible things as well as the martial art.’”
