Larp: The Movie

25th Feb 2014

For many LARPERS, inspiration comes not only from the imagination, but from the magical worlds of fantasy films and television shows. As we immerse ourselves in the world of LARP, drawing from characters and settings from such shows and movies as Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings, the last thing anyone would have guessed was that our fantasy role-play experience would be inspiration for a movie all its own.

In 2010, live-action role playing gave director Joe Lynch that very inspiration. Nearly four years ago began the production of Knights of Badassdom. After an extended production and post-production period, the movie all about LARP has finally been released!

The comedy horror film has an all-star fantasy cast, with Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, Community’s Dany Pudi, and Firefly’s Summer Glau. The three play best friends and dedicated LARPers out for a weekend of hilarious role-playing hijinx.

As a movie, Knights isn’t exactly the best the world has seen. It scored a 64./10 on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes gave it a measly 40%. While the film might not be a blockbuster to please the masses, it was certainly well received at Comic-Con International. Who do you think is the better judge in this case?

Despite the obvious shortcomings of Knights of Badassdom as a film production, that a movie paying homage the LARP subculture exists at all is a hoot. Live-action role players habitually gather to reenact fantasy scenarios from the big screen; now it is LARPers who are the celluloid heros.

Knights of Badassdom was officially released last year, but is now available on VOD. If you get your kicks from a joke only a LARPer would appreciate, then this one’s for you!
