Memorial Day Sale!

In the United States, Memorial Day is a major federal holiday on which Americans remember the nation’s fallen troops. The holiday, originally known as Decoration Day, was designated after the American Civil War to commemorate fallen Union and Confederate soldiers, and to this day it is a popular time to visit cemeteries and remember loved ones. This year’s Memorial Day is rapidly approaching, on Monday, May 26th, 2014.

It is not only an American phenomenon, as South Korea, Israel, and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador also celebrate their own versions of the holiday. South Korea marks the occasion on June 6th to remember those lost in the Korean War; Israel’s Yom Hazikaron (“Day of Remembrance” in Hebrew) falls on 4 Iyar of the Hebrew calendar; and Newfoundland and Labrador’s Memorial Day is celebrated on July 1st, in remembrance of the Dominion of Newfoundland’s losses at the Battle of the Somme in World War I.

The United States’ Memorial Day was first observed in a widely publicized fashion in Charleston, South Carolina on May 1st, 1865. The practice quickly spread and was widely accepted. America has a proud legacy of honoring its military roots, as the nation also observes Veteran’s Day, a federal holiday honoring all those who have served in military wars, in November. Memorial Day is a specific tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and fell in combat.

Memorial Day is also a time of celebration—its place on the final Monday of May on the calendar allows it to serve as a convenient segue into the start of summer weather and vacation season. Though the primary significance of the holiday lies in its salute to national military heroes, the holiday is observed warmly by Americans nationwide. Visits and ceremonies at cemeteries are common, but vacations, picnics, camping trips, family gatherings, and cookouts are also a large part of the celebration in the United States.
