Promoting Self Defense for Women Across the Globe

Women

When you go out, you would like to feel safe. Unfortunately, many people, specifically women, can’t go out unarmed. A recent photo campaign illustrating this issue has touched many women across the country. USA Today reports on this in a recent article titled “Photos of women's self-defense weapons hit a nerve.”

Michael Morain of USA Today via the Des Moines Register writes, “A University of Iowa art student's photo series of women and the things they carry to protect themselves against sexual assault has been shared millions of times on BuzzFeed and the Huffington Post, a week after actress Zooey Deschanel posted a link on her website HelloGiggles. The story showed up in the Italian edition of Vanity Fair. ‘It's been pretty crazy,’ said the artist, Taylor Yocom, 22, who graduates Saturday with a degree in photography. ‘I gave a TV interview during my last week of classes.’ The Des Moines native said the idea for the project came to her during a class discussion in February 2014, following several reports about sexual assaults that had occurred in Iowa City taxis. ‘We were just frustrated,’ Yocom said. ‘If you're at a party and then you go home alone, the taxis should be safe. And if they aren't, what's your next line of defense?’”

In India, self defense for women is also a major issue. One tactic to combat this is explored in a recent article for the Washington Post titled “Eye of the tiger: Girls boxing for self-defense, empowerment in Kolkata, India.” Nicole Crowder of the Washington Post writes, “In 2011, there were around 200 female boxers in India, and Muslim communities of West Bengal contributed about 55 percent of the total. In 1998, Asit Banerjee, president of the South Calcutta Physical Cultural Association, campaigned for women’s participation in the sport at a meeting of the Indian Boxing Federation. Training academies around Kolkata set out to boosts girls’ morale, and self-confidence, as well as to help them stay fit and learn self-defense. With a rape occurring every 20 minutes in a country with a population of 1.2 billion, women suffer violence in many segments of Indian society.”
