Reenactment: The Historic Crossing of the Delaware
Christmas 2013 marked the 237th anniversary of Washington’s crossing of the Delaware - and it also marked the 61st reenactment the that Revolutionary War turning point. For the past six decades, history buffs have gathered on the banks of the Delaware River to participate in the ceremony that commemorates the bravery and courage of those soldiers of the American Revolution in the face of adversity.
Being Washington
Of the many hopeful contenders, only one man can be George Washington for the big crossing. The New Jersey reenactors who have taken to honoring this historical event annually for the past sixty-one years make no haste in deciding which man will make the best General Washington for the affair.
According to a local New Jersey news source, intense auditions are held to determine the best man to lead the Revolutionaries across the Delaware River. They take into account everything from the reenactors’ period attire to their delivery of Washington’s famous speeches. It is truly a festive Trenton holiday tradition!
Reenactment Culture
The Crossing of the Delaware is certainly not the only historical event worth reliving. Thousands of people participate in bringing a history to life in a similar fashion, including reenacting individual battles and events, and even representing “living history” at gatherings such as renaissance fairs.

Out of true devotion to events and traditions of the past, reenactors are dedicated to achieving the utmost accuracy when it comes to period clothing and gear. Every piece from head to toe - from shirt buttons to belt buckles to shoelaces - must be precise to the period.
