The Chronicles of Narnia: Swords and Shields from Armory Replicas

One of the most beloved works of 20th century fiction by children and adults alike, the Chronicles of Narnia has been widely read, discussed, and adapted for several decades. The book’s plot, allegorical undertones, and imaginary world live on vividly in the collective imagination of millions.
The series of books comprises seven volumes, and has sold over 100 million copies since its publication, which began in 1950 and was completed in 1956. The books follow four ordinary English children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, as they discover a portal to a magical alternate world in a professor’s house and find themselves whisked into the midst of a crisis in the new world. They assist a talking lion named Aslan, the alternate world’s divine figure and chief protagonist, as he takes on the wicked White Witch, who has held Narnia in perpetual winter—but with no Christmas!—for a century.
The books have seen a major influence which continues up to the present day. Recently, several of the books of the series have been adapted into high-budget films. Author Philip Pullman, who wrote the acclaimed His Dark Materials trilogy, is an atheist who is believed to have written His Dark Materials as a secular fantasy response to the prominently Christianity-themed Narnia books. Indeed, both series begin with children finding portals to other worlds inside of wardrobes! And the novel Bridge to Terebithia by Katherine Paterson even borrows its name from the Narnia island “Terabinthia.”

The historical genesis (so to speak) of The Chronicles of Narnia was closely intertwined with that of another of the world’s most beloved works of fantasy literature, The Lord of the Rings. LOTR author J.R.R. Tolkien was a close friend of C.S. Lewis, and the two often discussed and shared ideas while writing their masterpieces. J.R.R. Tolkien even is credited with converting Lewis to Christianity, and this accounts for the strong biblical allegory which runs throughout The Chronicles of Narnia.
