At some point, you might have wondered to yourself, “Just how much fun can I have with a katana?” Consider a recent article from Rocket News 24 titled “Skiing samurai shreds the slopes with katana ski pole.”

Oona McGee of Rocket News 24 writes, “Every ski season in Japan brings with it an army of skiers and snowboarders keen to make tracks in fresh, world-class powder snow. But howcan you make your mark when you’re surrounded by hundreds of people decked out in ordinary ski jackets and snow goggles? One keen warrior-loving skier found a solution to this problem by donning some heavy samurai armour on the slopes. And just to make sure he had everyone’s attention, he decided to forgo the ski poles for a long, single-edged sword known as a katana. The man behind the battle mask is Shogo Kawano. An experienced skier, Kawano wore this outfit during an all-Japan mountain ski race. No mean feat, given that the armour weighs a hefty 25 kilograms (55 pounds).”

Of course, this all comes back to the larger fascination with the sword. Rocket News 24 takes a look at this fascination in a recent article titled “What’s so special about Japanese swords? We interview master katana maker Norihiro Miyairi!” Kay of Rocket News 24 writes, “RN24: There are many different types of weapons around the world. What do you think makes Japanese swords so deeply appealing? Miyairi: If you look around, you can find swords in every part of the world. But of all the different types of swords in the world, the Japanese katana is probably the only kind of sword that is appreciated for the beauty and artistry of the steel itself. Swords from other countries are ornately decorated and valued for carvings or jewels added to the blade, but Japanese swords are valued for the material they are made of. I think that’s the biggest difference. Historically, one of the three sacred treasures (sanshu no jingi) of Japan has been a sword, and the katana with its bright, shiny surface has traditionally been created as a kind of talisman, playing an important role in the culture and spirit of the Japanese people.”
