What You Need to Know About Pocket Scales
1st Feb 2015
Pocket scales aren’t always recognized for their practical uses. Do It Yourself tries to dispel these notions with an article titled “6 Common Uses for a Digital Pocket Scale.”
The practical uses he discusses are for camping, diamonds, luggage, pharmaceuticals, letters and parcels, and gold. In terms of gold, the author writes, “In days gone by jewelers would require gold weighing scales if they went out to purchase gold from an outside source. They would carry a large case around with them, which contained a set of heavy brass balancing scales and all the accompanying weights that needed to be taken along to complete the ensemble. Now, however, jewelers can carry a handy pocket scale which is no larger than a typical cell phone and weights about the same. These scales can accept weights of varying degrees, depending on the type they buy, but largely they can read most jewelry to ascertain weight and value.”
Do It Yourself doesn’t stop there. It also provides an article titled “How to Use a Digital Pocket Scale.” The author breaks it down into four steps. They read as follows:
Step 1 - What Is Calibration?
Step 2 - Calibration Variations
Step 3 - Zero the Scale
Step 4 – Calibration
A common mistake many people make when trying to use a digital scale is not zeroing the scale. The author writes, “If you look at the instructions with your digital pocket scale, you’ll see what you need to do in order to put the scale into calibration mode. It might require tapping a single button or a combination of buttons. Your scale might have come with a weight to use during the process. If not, you need to use something whose weight you know exactly. Place it on the digital pocket scale. At this point you’ll be prompted to enter the weight you’ve just put on the scale. Do so. In the event it’s a calibration weight that came with the scale, that weight might have been pre-programmed into the unit. When the weight has been typed in, hit enter. To complete the calibration, you’ll now need to turn the unit off, take the weight from the scale and turn the digital pocket scale back on. You might need to zero it once more before you use the scale to weight items.”
