Zombies Alive and on the March in Spokane
13th Jun 2014
It isn’t a headline you’ll see every day—you’re more likely to see it at night, in a vivid dream. But there it is—“Zombie Apocalypse Forces Road Closures in Spokane.” It’s not a parody news article, it’s not a newspaper clip from a movie; it’s real. Hopefully you keep reading long enough to see the rest of the teaser—“Remain calm, road closures are temporary.” The zombies are only in town for a little while—the streets will be open and the undead will vacate the town in no time!
Alas, anyone prepared for the coming of real zombies has to wait. This outbreak is only the work of the SyFy Channel. SyFy is producing Z Nation, a thirteen episode-long zombie series, in Spokane—Washington state’s second-largest city. Z Nation takes place three years after America has been ravaged by a zombie virus, and focuses on a team of everyday folk trying to transport the plague’s last known survivor cross-country to run medical tests on him.
Residents walking by Spokane’s Howard Street Bridge were surprised to see zombies in their town—maybe the sight of film crews and cameras next to them helped them cope with any resulting shock, though! “I’m surprised by it,” said resident Tim Burke. “I don’t know nothing about it, but it’s cool. It’s really cool, it’s cool to see.”
However, some residents were convinced by the zombies’ slow gait and makeup! “Some of them may actually be zombies. We don’t know,” Scott Burnett opined. The scenes on the streets of Spokane have surely given some Spokane natives a fright!
The entire series, though it depicts a cross-country journey from post-apocalyptic New York to California, will be shot in Spokane. The SyFy channel bills the main conflict of the story as an effort to turn the sole survivor’s antibodies into some form of treatment for the zombie virus—but this survivor has a dark secret! Zombie lovers worldwide rejoice.
