Zombies, Portland, and the Best Hideout During the Apocalypse

22nd Mar 2015

Zombie Apocalypse classes are becoming increasingly popular throughout the country because they teach real survival skills. In Portland, Oregon, one writer is spelling out the significance of the classes explicitly. Jamie Hale of Oregon Live looks at the importance of zombie apocalypse classes in a recent article titled “What zombies can teach us about surviving real disaster in Portland.”

Hale writes, “What was great about this experience, we realized, was the fact that we were essentially getting a tour of the community, meeting some fascinating people along the way and learning an incredibly diverse amount of survival knowledge -- all while evading zombies, of course. Say what you will about the undying zombie trend; this was great fun. We walked over to Three Friends Coffee House, where Linda Mikowski stood waiting. A recent transplant to Portland, Mikowski spoke of her experience hiking the Appalachian Trail and offered tips on avoiding and treating blisters. It's important to know what causes blisters, she explained: moisture, friction and heat. When you feel a "hot spot" on your foot, you can put duct tape directly on it to keep the blister at bay. Beyond that, it's all about keeping your feet clean and dry, and always changing your socks, she said.”

Cornell University is taking this to the next level. Phys.org explores this in a recent article titled “Zombie outbreak? Statistical mechanics reveal the ideal hideout.” The author writes, “If you somehow happen to find yourself in the midst of a fictional zombie outbreak and want to survive as long as possible, Alemi recommends making a run for the northern Rockies. While not an entirely practical implication, it's ‘fun to know,’ he says, and points out the benefits of applying hard science to fun topics—especially to help make learning more entertaining and enjoyable. ‘A lot of modern research can be off-putting for people because the techniques are complicated and the systems or models studied lack a strong connection to everyday experiences,’ Alemi adds. ‘Not that zombies are an everyday occurrence, but most people can wrap their brains around them.’”

Of course, if running to the northern Rockies isn’t in your plans, you can always get yourself ready with our huge selection of zombie apocalypse gear at Armory Replicas.
